CHRONOS(Cryogenic sub-Hz cROss torsion-bar detector with quantum NOn-demolition Speed meter)
【Title】
CHRONOS: Development and Challenges of a Torsion-Bar Gravitational-Wave Interferometer with a Speed-Meter Readout
【Abstract】
CHRONOS (Cryogenic sub-Hz cROss torsion-bar detector with quantum NOn-demolition Speed meter) is a new precision-interferometry project aimed at exploring gravitational waves and fundamental gravitational physics in the 0.1–10 Hz low-frequency band, which is difficult to access with conventional ground-based gravitational-wave detectors.
Led by National Central University in Taiwan, CHRONOS is currently being developed as an international collaboration involving research institutes from six countries. To suppress the impact of translational ground motion at low frequencies, CHRONOS employs precision measurement of rotational degrees of freedom by combining torsion pendulums with a Sagnac interferometer. The project also extends technologies developed for current large-scale gravitational-wave detectors—including cryogenic suspensions, seismic isolation, quantum-noise reduction, and precision calibration—to low-frequency measurements. The ultimate goal is to construct a 10-m-scale cryogenic interferometer and establish new observational techniques for the sub-Hz frequency regime.
In this talk, I will present an overview of the basic concept and detector design of CHRONOS, together with the ongoing development of its prototype interferometer. I will also introduce the scientific targets of CHRONOS, including gravitational waves from intermediate-mass black-hole binaries, stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds, precision tests of Newtonian gravity, and searches for dark matter. Finally, I will discuss the CHRONOS roadmap toward future observations, the technologies and science goals we aim to pursue, and the current status of the international collaboration.
